Rickey L. Thigpen

Rickey L. Thigpen joined Visit Jackson (formally the Jackson Convention & Visitors Bureau) 1987 as the Manager of Information Systems. For the past 29 years Thigpen has served in multiple management positions within the administrative and marketing disciplines. Currently Thigpen serves as executive vice president of Jackson’s official destination marketing organization. He is responsible for governmental & community engagement, stakeholder relationships, signature event management and new & untraditional market initiatives. Thigpen also serves as the Executive Director of Destination Jackson, Inc., the visitor industry’s 501c3 tourism non-profit organization.
Thigpen is a member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including Destination Marketing Association International, 100 Black Men of Jackson, Inc., Mississippi Valley State University National Alumni Association, Leadership Jackson Alumni Association (Board of Directors), Alpha Foundation, Inc. (Vice-Chairman), and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., (where he served as the 10th Mississippi District Director and member of the Southern Region Board of Directors). Thigpen represents Visit Jackson and Jackson Tourism Industry on numerous committees and commissions including the Mississippi Tourism Association (PAC) Board of Directors & MTA’s (Annual Meeting Committee), Red Cross-Mississippi Chapter (Board of Directors), Mississippi Restaurant & Lodging Association and the Mississippi Tourism Association. He serves as a principal member of Visit Jackson’s Speakers Bureau. Thigpen is the principal of Peripheral Consulting, an integrated Organizational Diagnostic firm specializing in professional coaching, board and staff retreats, corporate & organizational behavior, and peer and youth motivation.
Thigpen is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. He holds a baccalaureate degree in Computer Science, a master’s degree in Leadership. Thigpen is currently a Ph.D. Candidate at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology; finalizing degree requirements in the area of Psychology/Organizational Behavior & Leadership. Additionally, Thigpen has earned professional certifications from the University of Southern Mississippi, the Mississippi Tourism Association, and Destination Marketing Association International. In 2016, Thigpen was recognized by Black Meetings & Tourism magazine as one of the most influential African-Americans in the tourism industry.
Thigpen is a member of Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he serves as member of the Music Staff and Public Relations Ministry.
Rickey Thigpen was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. through the Zeta Phi Chapter seated on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University on November 14, 1985. He has served in several leadership capacities including College Chapter Advisor, Chapter President, Area Director, and Mississippi 10th District Director. Brother Thigpen has also served on numerous boards and committees at the Region and National levels. In January of 2017, Brother Thigpen will assume the role as Chairman of Life Membership of our great brotherhood.
